Miami, Florida, May 26, 2001 – The Dade County Bar Association, Black Lawyers Association, Cuban American Bar Association, Florida Association of Women Lawyers, and the Miami Dade Legal Support Association joined forces Saturday, May 26th to help Habitat For Humanity build several homes for people in need. Over 60 Lawyers from all over Miami-Dade County traded in their pens and briefcases in for nails and hammers to help install insulation, put up dry wall, and caulk windows for homes in the N.W. 12th Street and 8th Avenue section of Overtown (Miami).
“As lawyers we help people in a court of law on a daily basis,” said Ervin A. Gonzalez, President of the Dade County Bar Association. “We also help numerous charitable and civic organizations by making financial contributions and by serving in leadership positions. Volunteering our time to Habitat For Humanity allows us to use our physical efforts to give something back to the community by building homes for our less fortunate neighbors who cannot afford housing without the assistance of the Habitat project.”
The lawyers were also joined by secretaries, paralegals and other legal support staff.
“We’re very excited about this project,” said Gonzalez. “It’s a very worthy cause which we hope to participate in next year as well. ”
